GARDEN NEWS – EARLY SPRING

Since the beginning of January, the weather has brought us nothing but rain, rain and more rain, but that doesn’t stop the garden team!

The past few weeks have been a busy and productive time. An old concrete platform that once housed two large gas tanks has been carefully broken up and reused, transforming the space into a low-walled kitchen garden. This adds symmetry to the herb garden opposite and creates a wonderful focal point that will continue to develop over the coming months. Seeds that have already germinated will be potted on and grown until conditions are suitable for planting out in the beds. If you’re visiting soon, do pop along for a morning coffee and take a look at the kitchen garden in progress.

WOODLAND RESTORATION

Another major focus has been the restoration of our woodland areas. In places, the laurel had become so dense that little else could grow. We are now fully removing it to reclaim these neglected spaces, allowing the woodland floor to regenerate naturally, and reopen long-hidden views down to the river. As more light reaches the ground, we’re hopeful that dormant daffodil and bluebell bulbs will re-emerge, and that the area will once again provide a richer habitat for wildlife, including pollinators and native species.

The wet weather also gives us the opportunity to reflect on what worked well in the garden last year and to plan for the seasons ahead. Clearing sheds, greenhouses and polytunnels, maintaining tools and machinery, and tackling unwanted growth are all essential winter jobs — even if they’re done between downpours!

There’s plenty happening behind the scenes to ensure the gardens are at their very best for spring — and to create even more beautiful spaces for our guests to enjoy.
